Teaching/tutoring

Comprehensive Music Education and Tutoring Expertise

I teach GCSE (all exam boards), A-level (all exam boards), piano, composition, theory, aural, history, orchestration, and undergraduate/postgraduate degree courses/modules.

I have taught for the last 26 years, privately as a piano, theory, composition, GCSE, A-level and undergraduate/postgraduate degrees, orchestration, history and musicianship/aural tutor with fellowships/posts at the Royal College of Music, London College of Fashion, London College of Communication, and the University of the Arts London. I have taught children from the age of 4+ up to adults (70+). I teach mainly online.

I teach and guide each student differently, depending on their experience, commitment and what they wish to achieve – from relaxed music making, casual lessons, or rigorous work for exams, GCSE, A-level, degrees, entry exams, concerts or competitions. I currently teach online and in London.

What My Students Say About Their Learning Experience

Discover heartfelt feedback from my students as they share their personal journeys, growth, and successes throughout their learning experience.

Phillip tutored my son for 2 years during his A Level course to support his learning because the level of teaching he was receiving was inadequate. Phillip is extremely knowledgeable and highly qualified and provided great support to my son, filling in gaps in his knowledge and building your confidence in the subject. Phillip was wonderful in helping my son identify the style of composition he wanted to create and translating his composition into notation.

My son was awarded an A for his composition and was offered a place at his preferred university to study Music. I have no doubt he would not have been successful without Phillip’s teaching.

Phillip was also great at keeping me informed on progress which meant I was confident that the A Level syllabus would be completed in time and that my son would be fully prepared for tackling the exam questions.

Separately Phillip provided support to my daughter who has a learning difficulty and struggles to read music in the conventional way meaning that Phillip had to find an alternative way to teach her.

I have known Phillip for more than 2 years and cannot recommend him highly enough. He is a very calm teacher, very empathetic and understanding and puts a lot of himself into his teaching.

Phillipa got back to us very quickly. His trial lesson was excellent and he was very helpful in his comments about my son’s playing. We are very pleased that he will be coming to be his tutor.

Phillip is an excellent teacher. He makes sure my son not only play the pieces but learns music so that he wouldn’t struggle when he is practicing alone.

He regularly updates me about how my son is doing and suggests ways to improve him.

He also informs us about the concerts and musical events that might be interesting for us.

Amazing tutor. He makes the lesson very interesting as well as captivating. I am looking forward to more lessons from him as within 2 weeks I have improved vastly.

Phillip is teaching Grade 5 music theory to my 15-year-old daughter who has had very little formal music training but is keen to learn. He is an inspirational teacher, full of passion and ideas and has opened up a whole new world of music to her.

She has enthused about the classes, discussing what she has learned afterwards and always looking forward to the next one. He has judged the level very well – challenging without being intimidating. Phillip clearly has complete mastery of the subject and is a great teacher too.

Philip is very knowledgeable, he understands music composition very well. I wasn’t aware of the extent of my ignorance, thanks to Philip now I know what I don’t know, which is very useful in order to improve.

Even though I still have a lot to learn, Philip take the time to adapt and teach step by step. I truly believe I am building good foundations in order to become a better music writer in the future.

Philip is also very passionate, each lesson is captivating and I am always looking forward to it.

Phillip is a great teacher who takes the time to explain each concept. He created a bespoke lesson based on what I needed and was searching for. After only a few weeks, I could see significant results. I will continue with our lessons every week.

Having been hospitalised with glandular fever at the beginning of the year my son had his degree dissertation hand-in extended. With little support from his university I secured the services of Phillip who expertly mentored my son, resulting in a first for his dissertation. Without Phillip’s guidance he would not have achieved this. I can highly recommend Phillip.

He teaches my daughter a lot on ABRSM Theory Grade 6 to give her a good foundation for GCSE or higher grades. We are very pleased to find him.

I have been working with Phillip for around 4 months now. Our sessions focus on the relationship between music and text in theatre. He is very dedicated, with inspiring energy and a wide range of musical styles he draws on for our lessons.

His response to my work is perceptive and quick, and he clearly has a comprehensive training behind him. He also has the bonus of fastidious organisation, prompt replies to emails and punctuality. I’d recommend him to anyone wanting to take serious steps forward in musical ability.

Excellent

Real quality teaching.

Phillip is brilliant. He`s direct, though warm, supportive and very inspiring. I would definitely recommend.

Phillip is very good at tailoring the lessons to exactly what is needed and filling in specific knowledge gaps. Communication is excellent, and he provides a lot of really good resources around the topics to look at after the lessons. The lessons are also very enjoyable!

Excellent teacher, inspiring lessons!

Goes above and beyond to help…

Very inspirational and knowledge teacher. He was able to make my daughter improve dramatically in her composition skills till achieving the best mark in GCSE. I would definitely recommend him.

I’ve been studying composition with Phillip for about 10 months now. He is extremely knowledgable, good at explaining things (including answering random off-topic questions, complete with musical examples!), well-prepared, patient, encouraging, and any other quality you might wish for in a music teacher (imo)!

a wonderful teacher that brought me back to a much needed ‘basics’ Phillip has an inner wisdom when teaching, combining theory and practice in a way that makes class end too early. Keeps you wanting to practise more

If you’re wondering about him, Phillip ticks all the boxes as a music teacher: he can play pretty much anything on the piano, he can listen to a piece of music and tell you the notes and how they’re working together and then he also knows all the theory inside out.
However, what makes him a really great teacher is his passion for music – and teaching it. His enthusiasm and love for what he does is very apparent in each lesson, which makes for a very engaging and rewarding experience.

I would recommend Philip as a music tutor. He is a very good teacher, reliable and organised. The lessons are on zoom, he has a very nice way with the students making the lessons enjoyable and very productive.
Thank you!

We are so impressed with Phillip. Would recommend unreservedly.

A great tutor. I recommend his lessons.

Phillip is very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. I highly recommend him.
